Dr. Larry Van Genderen was one of these physicians, as was Dr. Lou Hochheiser, the present CEO of St. John's Medical Center.
Dr. Larry Van Genderen served for two patrols aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln based in Holy Loch, Scotland. Each crew would fly across the Atlantic to operate the ship for a three-month period. From 1963 to 1966, Larry and his wife, Barbara, lived in Old Lyme, Connecticut, a short distance from the U.S. navy submarine base in Groton, Connecticut. Their two older children, Peter and Sara, were born there. Larry also served as medical officer to a squadron of 10 submarines, nuclear- and diesel-powered, a submarine rescue and a sea diving vessel. There was even a working cruise to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda and a trip into the New York harbor on the Hudson River...."
